Real, Visible Progress You Can Believe In
One of the most satisfying aspects of following a project like this is arriving at the point where the progress is easier to see. At the beginning a lot of the work is happening under the surface, laying foundations that most people will never see. As those stages are done, the size of the project begins to be apparent.
Foundation work is underway throughout the site and concrete piling is now 92.6 percent complete. Meanwhile, structural steel continues rising in various areas of the project and concrete works are steadily progressing. The completion of each area allows the possibility of progress to another.
Over the past week, teams have completed wall casting in the Air Separation Unit and continue to work on beam and roof slabs. Structural steel and piping installation has continued in the ironmaking area and the product warehouse. Behind each of those updates are people working diligently to make sure that each stage is properly completed before the next one begins.
Another positive sign has been the arrival of crucial equipment needed for the next construction phases. Deliveries comprised heavy structural components, specialised mechanical equipment, oxygen and liquid nitrogen storage tanks for the Air Separation Unit and transformers for the 220kV electrical substation. Every delivery is another piece to the bigger picture that is coming together.
Thousands of individual tasks done by engineers, technicians, contractors and site teams, all playing their part in different ways, are the result. It is rewarding to see the effort coming to fruition in the progress now unfolding across the site, with over 260 people on the job.
There’s a lot of work to be done, but every update reminds me how far we’ve come. The Benghazi steel complex is inching closer to a reality, step by step.
