Benghazi Steel Complex Progress

Some parts of a project are more evident than others. One of them is the end of the piling program. With most of the piling work done, one of the main foundation phases of the Benghazi steel complex is complete, with most of the project moving to the next stage.
Much of the activity on site for a long time was about preparing what couldn’t be seen. Foundations are seldom the most visible part of a development but they are the basis of everything that follows. Now that work is done, more of the site is starting to change as construction moves further above ground.
In a number of areas of the complex progress can already be seen. The groundwork for the future 220 kV substation is still underway and concrete work is in progress at the Gas Compressor Building. Reinforcement and formwork are ongoing at the Duct Bridge and TT08 Area, getting these sections ready for the next phase of construction.
At the same time the steel complex is becoming more recognizable. Masonry work continues inside the Main Control Building and the Maintenance Building. Steel beams and columns continue to rise in the Reduction Area, the Pipe Rack and the Gas Area. More permanent structures are starting to take shape as cladding is also being installed on the CDRI Warehouse.
Another major development has been the installation of the Bucket Wheel Stacker and Reclaimer in the Oxide Storage Area. While not the most visible piece of equipment on site, once production starts it will play an important role in handling and transferring raw materials throughout the plant.
Progress is also being made away from the main site. The construction of the dedicated 220 kV transmission line linking the complex with the North Benghazi Substation is still ongoing. Most of the transmission towers are already in place, and the future infrastructure of the project is coming together steadily.
